Another newbie question: so what happen to changes in value between valuation date and "today"? So for example, if my stock portfolio, in my name, was worth $5,000 on valuation date, and today, it's worth $4,000, does my X get $2,500 or $2,000 of equalization payment?

Is it possible to resolve some or all of the financial matters - i.e. complete equalization or compelte equalization except for the matrimonial home before custody issues are resolved?

In the case of assets other than the matrimonial home, nothing happens. Although I do recall hearing stories about investment portfolios that decline big time in value after valuation and how that decline prevented the party paying the equalization payment to meet the obligation.

And yes, you are certainly free to settle property division prior to custody. That's exactly what we did.

Thank you for the quick response. I suppose if the home can be divided, i.e. the home can be sold or the party not keeping the home moved out, then it makes sense, otherwise, it's hard to split the rest of the money but still have to contribute money back to pay for costs of running the home and the mortgage, etc. Doable but probably not easy.

I would like to settle property before custody since I see our custody issues to take a lot of time, however, I also see both of us living in the same home before the custody issues are resolved since as much as my X wants to move out, I wouldn't allow her to take our child with her.
