we lived together for 16 years and I broke up with her. over the 16 years she did pay more as her 2 kids lived with us and my kids lived with my ex. which I payed support for. She says (wants) me to leave with nothing. We bought a house together and cottage which money is still owed on . the house is worth in the range of 380.00 thousand and the cottage 230.00 thousand. The morgage is around 280 thousand on the house I offered to take half the morgage 145 thousand give her the house I keep the cottage. if she sold the house she would end up withat least 200 thousand and if i sold the cottage around 70 thousand . I think i'm being fair as she would stand to gain more money than I. We both have good paying jobs and I admit she payed more as I payed support and brought less income because of this. Am I wrong in thinking this??

jta1559,

Is both of your names on the deed of the home and cottage?

If so, I suspect that both properties would be up for equal division along with equal distribution of the liabilities on same.

A lot's going to depend on how the 2 properties are titled.

Also, remember that "contributions" from a legal point of view are not just financial - it can be housework, raising kids, doing repairs around the home. A lot more is looked at than just who made the money.
