STBX Changed My Address To Get My Tax Receipts

With the exception of CPP/AOS receipts, I didn't receive any tax returns this year. My lawyer is away until next week and before he left he mentioned this problem in a multiple page letter to his lawyer. I feel that STBX changed my address with CRA to get my tax receipts. I've tried to contact CRA but it's next to impossible...offices are closed, phone runarounds, just for a simple inquiry.

STBX hasn't given information about his bank accounts on DOS and it's been almost 18 months. It's getting ridiculous...he's taking me to court when he is the one who hasn't even provided full financial disclosure yet.

Guess I'm venting mostly, but maybe I won't feel so alone if I know others have had the same thing happen and what transpired in their cases.:(

From what you've told us, there is obviously a lot of emotions going on there. You said and I quote "I feel that STBX changed my address", now that is a wild accusation and unless you know for sure and have the facts to back it up...now do ya?

When you log into your CRA account, what address is on file? If you don't have an account, you can set one up like some of us have

You said you received your CPP and OAS slips, but not your tax return. What other tax slips from CRA are you looking for? The actual tax returns were not mailed out this year. You have to download them online.

On CRA...

I thought there was a big push from CRA to do everything electronically. I haven't tackled taxes yet. However, I have the understanding that CRA is not mailing anything. If I'm wrong, I'll find out by the end of this month.

On disclosure...

My STBX is the respondent. He has not fully disclosed - original deadline was summer of 2012. I am beginning to examine the consequences of not pursuing this. I suspect, it would be a long drawnout process to get him to comply... possibly never.

I'm thinking there may be a better way. I'm working on this - examining the possibile outcomes/consequences of doing x or y.... (I cannot afford to transfer my measly savings to an undeserving lawyer. I can't afford any legal help really - even if I found a quality lawyer who had a lot of integrity.)

I don't want to nudge your post into another direction. Just try to imagine a scenario where you can't get your STBX to play fair when it comes to disclosure. I get the impression (from this forum) that the court can only do so much anyway.

caranna - I can understand your angst in this. I found out that one government department can have your address change but the other department may not. Crazy aint it?

Probably best to go into your local CRA office and plan to wait in line. Might be shorter wait than on the phone. Plan a fun event afterwards to reward yourself.

As others have stated, CRA is not mailing out tax returns this year for you to fill out. If you prefer a paper return, there are returns provided at Canada Post Outlets, including the the small ones at drugstores, etc.

You should absolutely sign up at Canada Revenue Agency - Main menu for web access to your accounts. You may use this to track your tax return, to get a copy of notices of assessment going back several years, to check what your various benefit payments will be this year, GST refunds, etc. and to set up direct deposit of your tax refund and some other benefits into your bank accounts.

You may now file electronicly without a sepcial access code, you just need your SIN and birthdate.

1-800-959-8281 is the number for enquiries. They open at 8:15 am your local time. (I presume that calls are forwarded according to where you call from.) I recommend calling at 8:15 sharp, put the phone on speaker, sit back and read the newspaper and have a cup of tea while you wait.

I went all the way to trial and still never got full disclosure.

So in cases were one party doesn't do a full disclosure, how is NFP calculated then? I ask because I disclosed a full for 13.1 my court files. If stbx replies and is asking for CS, SS and part of the MH, pension doesn't she have to do a full disclosure also in order to see what her entitlement is?

Oink: NFP wasn't calculated in the absence of full disclosure. His lying ass was imputed an income (too low, imo) and that was that.

I intend to get that addressed/re-adjusted based on recent evidence and disclosure that I should have had (but didn't) at the time of trial. Well, I have it now.

Anyway I think we've hijacked the thread. @Caranna: good luck with CRA. Hopefully it can get sorted out quickly.

Yes imputing income can be a viable process. I am proceeding in that direction now. I have facts/data to corroborate.

Hadenough - hopefully you can nail his ass when your agreement comes up for review.

I've been looking for T'3s and T'5s. Now I'm thinking the best way would be to contact the banks. My STBX looked after our PERSONAL financial matters, and it's a sad story but so common, that I just signed the tax returns without even looking at them. I did, however, involve myself really deeply in the businesses we owned.

Arabian, there is no waiting in line at the CRA. Just a table with cards listing telephone numbers that are listed in the phone book.

Thanks Mess, I will try all your suggestions.

No problem about any hijacking...this is what the forum is all about...helping people and if my thread leads to another matter, I'm ok with it, in fact i'm happy.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Arabian and Hadenough, I wish you both the very best!

Did your husband personally prepare all of the tax returns or use an accountant or staff accountant? You would think that if your signature was on these documents the accountant would be obligated to give you copies.

Banks won't release information on accounts that are only in his name. I've been through that before. Best I could get was a court order (what a joke) ordering him to produce bank statements. One judge even ordered him to attend to my lawyer's office to sign release forms. That didn't happen. Unfortunately we were unprepared for this and would have had the release forms at the court house. We certainly won't make the same mistake again.

The Who - "We won't get fooled again"

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgment of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again

Change it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fall that's all
But the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
And I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie

Do ya?

There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Thx Caranna. Fingers crossed for you ;)

^perfectly appropriate. Yes unfortunately everything is in hindsight isn't it? I had no idea my ex would be such an ahole about documents. I also didn't know what a terrible effect his non-compliance would have on my closing our business down. All I can surmise is that the documentation I am seeking must contain some very damaging information. Could he just be doing this only to make my life difficult???? Naw really?

As Rioe said on a different thread;

"I bet he wants to keep you overwhelmed by the little battles so that you miss the one he considers big. You decide on your line in the sand, and stand firm on that. Fighting over every little thing will drive you bonkers and play into his game."

Thanks Arabian and Hadenough. STBX took loads of valuable things out of the house, and I never asked for one thing back. I did have my lawyer let him know about them though and STBX denied taking a lot of things, especially the cool ones, like really old, valuable books.

I've been planning to ask the banks if they did receive a change in address, listing me as living with him! He did have a previous joint bank statement mailed to his address with both our names on it. Oh my gosh, even the thought of my name on his mailing address makes me cringe and recoil with horror! Ewww!

It's funny that he didn't want the unused kitty litter and toilet paper back. You know, the ones he included on his household items list.

Thanks for the song Hadenough. You know the old saying "fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."

Yes I know he wants to have me confused and sick and crazy. So far I'm doing great!

Arabian, our tax returns were prepared by an accountant. There's no problem with the returns as we both have lawyers and have exchanged this information.

I hope you get his bank statements soon. Looks like he wants to hide information because he doesn't want to share his assets, he's just being ornery and combative or both. My lawyer has requested STBX provide not only bank statements as of the date of separation but also 6 months previous.
