Kids in grade 8 have never heard of sex, and are unaware of the Internet. If you give a 13 year old boy a flip book of cartoony safe sex, two bad things will happen. First of all, he will begin to masturbate, and his hairy palms will impact his social life. Secondly he will begin to have sex with strangers and do drugs.

Also, the depiction of a condom might make him gay. I'm glad the mother is on the ball here.

Grade 8 is the perfect time to teach kids this stuff, imho.

High school is the next year, and the rules change from elementary to high school.
 
When I was in Grade 8 in the 70s, we knew some kids who were having sex.

I would not have needed the book, having grown up in the country.

My girls, 17 and 15, would not have been shocked by the book, even though neither of them has had a boyfriend.

It doesn't mean they aren't getting up to any hanky panky
 
I know my girls very well Oink, I was and still am a very involved father. While anything is possible, they would have to be amazing con artists to hide that kind of thing from me. Oh they have crushes, but they haven't gone on dates. They have done group things with boys. I don't discourage them from dating. I know with two girls, one of them would tell me if the other was dating, they just can't keep secrets well.
