Someone informed me that if I die, and because I am not divorced, my uknowwho will be the beneficiary. It does not seem that you can change the beneficiary. Does anyone know how this works? I didn't quite understand it.

Why can't you change the beneficiary? Go to the provider (your workplace, your insurance company, etc) and change it.

However, if you are not divorced, or have a legal will specifying changes, your ex will have an easier time contesting anything.

My employer wouldn't let me change the beneficiary for pension or life insurance until I could prove I was legally divorced. It's not unusual. Stbx took care of this for me (we share the same employer) because he was in a hurry to get his new wife onto his benefits.

Why would you not let your wife have the money? When you die, your ex will have the kids, then who wil take care of the kids if the money doesnt go to the person who is your kids parent/gardian? A person takes a life insurance policy for the security of their family. I would let my kids have that money rather than give it to other family member who could most definitely be greedy and change their mind and take that money and run. For my kids security I would trust that my ex would be the most appropriate person to be the beneficiary.
