It doesn't really matter when you pay her. Her lawyer will get her to sign a direction that his legal fees get paid out of her proceeds from the equalization payment and will therefore have a pretty good guarantee that her battle can be fought knowing his pot of gold is at the end of the equalization rainbow.
My ex pissed away the $40K I paid her in exactly that manner. When we finally got to settlement on equalization she saw none of it as it went to her lawyer. By that time she had racked up well in excess of that in legal fees.
When the lawyers see your financial disclosure they know pretty well how big the asset pool is and they can very safely act without payment knowing that ultimately their fees will be taken care of.
