hey all, i need some real help here, so far i have spent close to 15000 dollars and have got absolutely nothing done in my divorce no motions, offers or orders . we had our first case conference 5000 dollars back. i switched lawyers figuring i was getting hosed but the new one is no better and possibly even worse. i live in the niagara region so if anyone knows a good "honest" lawyer please help.

I hate to burst your bubble but I had the same experience as you. I originally got a lawyer and he was brain dead so I switched lawyers thinking I got a dud. The second one was just as dumb as the first (just like your second one). I then went self represented and finally things got moving. So to answer your question, there are no good lawyers in my opinion. I am totally convinced of that. If you find a good one, I'll be truly amazed.

Why don't you self represent? I know it's intimidating but there are people on here that will help you do-it-yourself. I went to trial self represented and came out ahead.

No such thing as a "good, honest" lawyer. There might be a few exceptions but don't hold your breath. I feel I can say this b/c I've met with, and dealt with many lawyers over the years. Between my own personal experiences and seeing the ex's lawyer(s) in action - it's pretty abysmmal in general.

It's not the self rep part I find the most daunting. It's all the forms and procedure and having to constantly photocopy everything that I find to be overwhelming. It doesn't help that the FLIC office at my courthouse seems to be particularly inept. You can just tell they are putting in their 'time' and don't really want to be there - at all.

Depends on what you mean by "good". Do you mean super aggressive and will fight tooth and nail to get you what you want regardless of the cost?

Or a lawyer who is reasonable, can give you good, balanced advice and think of all the aspects of a situation?

I had a big, expensive law firm and all I got was a $5,000 bill and a war with my stbx's lawyer. I swear it was a pissing contest.

When I switched to a different lawyer, I just wanted things to progress. My new lawyer (in the Niagara Region) is awesome. He listens and advises in a balanced way. He considers what my ex might think and what is fair to both of us. He has worked as a OCL so he considers my children. He is calm and thoughtful and doesn't just jump all over everything without considering both sides. I find it fantastic because he is thinking what the other lawyer will say and do and plans accordingly. He almost acts as a mediator but with my best interests at heart. I appreciate the way he works so much.

Good lawyers are out there. You just have to ask the questions that are important to you and keep very focused on what it is you want to accomplish, not what it is you want to "win".

I would consider this the definition of a good lawyer.

Aggressive lawyers (sharks) tend to be non-settlement oriented, appeal to HC clients, and tend to over-promise and under-deliver.

They're great if you want a loudmouth and a big bill though.

I have a good lawyer. She bills at a reasonable rate, listens to what I say and gives me options to resolve, and mostly she's geared towards trying to get to settlement despite my stalling ex.

Good luck finding a good one!

basically looking for a lawyer who will look out for my interests.
i have been put through so much by the ex over this period with nothing ever being done to stop her.
i still have not received any cs or ss and she earns 3 times the income
i dont want to be unfair and try to gouge but i need someone that is cabable of being firm against stbx aggression and her lack of responsibility to the children

my first lawyer promissed me the sky saying i was entitled to all sorts of equalization huge ss and cs payments . i knew we were pretty close on equalization, less than 20000 being paid to me. i think he was trying to "buy" me

the second lawyer seems all too eager to settle everything and really isnt too concerned with an equalization payment and seems to flip flop on some of the issues.
