This may be a no brainer - I have spoken with the dealer sales manager and he has given me a verbal number on the value of the car, my car is in my name. I can write something up with the number from the deealer and if stbx agrees - and signs the page to agreement (she can talk to him directly if she chooses.

Would that be something that could get thrown out for what ever reason - the second "safe" option is the official valuation on letterhead. Cost is $140.... but he may knock it down a bit for me. If there is a chance to not spend the money here - and instead use it on utility bills.

Any comments in thier settlements or experience?

Thank you so much - this is really a great site - already passed it on to a few people! It produced a number $50 more than the dealer. Would this actually fly in court if it went that far??? I really do want to keep this one and the luck of coming accross one like this for the money was pure luck x3.

I also did the 2nd car - my mom's that came to me when she passed away a 1993 plymouth acclaim that it came up with a $900 figure for a car with 27,000kms. Can I find another one for that coin??? It is again exactly what the mazda dealer said - I will not find comparables, the car is too old to be tracked wholesale so it comes down to it is worth exactly what someone will pay for it on the day they make the offer. Since the car is not a collectable pricing is impossible and the $900 is way too low for a near mint automobile. Dealer came up with $4500, dealer price $5,800 to $6,000 and not many dealers would want it on the lot risk wise. If it was a 1964 Vette.... then who would want to sell it with a 20 year old son car nut in the house!!

If anyone argues the $50 in court by the time they do...you'll owe the lawyers, judges, etc about $500 so I wouldn't recommend it...lol.

If you're figuring out the values of these automobiles for your financial statement..reallll simple. Go to Autotrader..find a couple comps..take a median range and write it down. You are way overanalyzing this.

I hope you don't do this stuff in front of your lawyer...you're going to have a legal bill the size of Texas.

Hello pursuinghappiness!

the lawyers! Lawyer was good about that - he explained before our fist sit down what he needs and how to cut back his time so Ha no! - just totals and a title like:
"my 2007 Mazda" $10,100"

-My financials are on one page
-Exclusions, inheritance, variation of share on 1/2 page
-Short backup explaining the numbers in the second file 1-2 pages each.
-Third is my main files with everything i got sorted by title and numbered for reference
(reference #'s because I couldn't remember what i did or where it was)

(I actually put this car to bed doing a few online checks, printing a few comparables - spoke to the dealer (good fellow) about realistic figures what three months ago. I am happy - she really is not!)

This car thing is because she won't stop hounding me about it - like every couple of weeks - but she won't work out a bill paying agreement?????

Remember my instructions and training I do!! If stbx is in house upsatairs i am in the basement - or the garage with my new setup that is a "desk 5 feet tall". I do not interact no more - and I thank you personally - it really works! My kids have noticed and asked and my response was a simple because it is easier on me. Done.

Well frickin woman was "chasing me down" this week end. I gather she is speaking to people\single person and three times she gets in about the car! Said nothing, walked away twice - third i closed the laptop, grabbed the dog and it was off to the park!

Seriously I am trying - and yup I am sort of worried about what she can do that will just cause the lawyer fees to escalate - too many are falling into the trap and i do not want to be one - this is why now i ask instead of using my "it makes sense" because nothing is making sense to me anymore regarding my stbx, communicating with her and trying my darndest to be the bigger person. Sorry for the typiing again.

Actually this car came up again (a few other things too) by stbx, over and over and over - she really resents that this car was bought 9 days before she said divorce - and she is going on with and I want the full price for what we paid not one of those funny cheap numbers. (the cheap number is the price I am supposed to give that doesn't include the tax and it needs to get detailed and I am learning - the price we paid included a warranty of sorts and that does not have a value)

So I hope I am getting this right - doin it right and I think I hit a plateau of sorts that - zero, no, none, keep quiet, say not a word (I did say thank you when she gave me the plate of spagetti on Sunday though)...... Sorry I type again - I am starting to get better at it though with the practice - maybe this is a good thing;)

Just a note about autotrader prices - these are ASKING prices, not actual SELLING prices. It is easily argued that the actual selling prices are slightly lower. Then again, you can add HST, and for dealers there are likely some other extra charges (depends on the dealer).

The sales manager from Mazda called later this evening - he added something I did not understand but as he said he has done hundreds to the point of lost count years ago. What he has done, and was asked to sit in front of the judge a few times. Pricing is based on the sale of the car today - on the day of your valuation. You do not get top pricing on a one day sale - but every car has value. The average advertized car has been for sale for a while, trying to get max dollar and as dinkyface said Auto Trader pricing is just that. The issue of detailing to get a car ready for top price - it really does not take too much longer to do a car that has been used for a few weeks than the average used vehicle that is being used as a daily driver so cost there is not a factor really. The other thing for top dollar is a warranty of some fashion - this is where the dealer versus private sale debate comes in. Many people try and get dealer pricing on a private sale without the "dealer perks". Never gave this much though in all these years so boy i got a ton of info here for what was also said - for a car that the stbx is pissed off about..... she is pissed about a lot of things.

There is so much more important things to spend energy on.......
Thanks for the help - I am putting this one to bed - it is done right wether she likes it or not.
