How should I pay support? Cheque only?

I pay support via bank electronic bill payment from my account to her account and then send an email to my ex to state that I did it every month.

If I had to prove to FRO that I made payments, how should I do the payments? Is this method good enough?

Writing cheques is of course an option but I really prefer the electronic method.

In my case, they asked me if I was up to date, then they called my ex to confirm and that was that. I paid by electronic transfer as well, and I could use bank statements to prove that. In fact I just had to do that for Revenue Canada.

The challenge with cheques is the payee can hoard them and cash them all at once later down the road.

E-transfer is fine, there is a spot for notes where you can indicate CS payment for XX month. You get a confirmation number, keep track of that, and an email confirnation when thet have accepted, keep that too.

That should be all the documentation you need.

A note on the e-transfers:

With some banks, for some reason, once you have sent the e-transfer, you don't get to view and print off the part that has the notes on it for yourself. So it's hard to prove exactly what the transfer was for. I use e-transfers for all my Section 7's.

It's a good idea to change up your secret question/ answer every time - even make it a random code. Email the ex with that code every time, once the payment is done. Include in the email the purpose of the payment. That way, if they manage to retrieve the code, you can prove they received the email explaining the purpose of the payment, and you directly link the payment to the reason for the payment.

My situation is very high conflict. I have learned the hard way. I send my emails about these payments through Family Wizard. I have even had my ex deliberately not "pick up" e-transfers, then accuse me of contempt because of not making the payments. I have had to make duplicate payments to FRO because I was too nice at the beginning, and not careful with my documentation. Never again ;-)

In Alberta, if you have a support order enforced by MEP they actually fine you if you pay any money directly after the order has been registered with MEP. Check it out as I believe MEP and FRO are almost identical in policy.

Many people prefer to go through FRO/MEP as it lessens the amount of contact they have with ex.

You should pay it with a big $h1t eating grin, and thanks the Lord for the privilige of doing so.

Oh, that's not exactly what you were asking?
Lol.

I forwarded FRO copies of bank statements showing e-transfers when it became an issue for me. Was accepted without issue

Pay by cheque. CRA and FROM want to see the payee name, date and amount for each payment. In our case our electronic transfers do not show that. And we had to pay over 120$ to retrieve these statements.

1. Bank-to-bank transfers. If you both bank with the same institute you can do this. Then the bank is on the hook as a third party whom is transferring the funds.

2. I would do it through the banks directly. This way a third party has record of the transfers. You have this with checks but, some people will claim they lost the check et...

3. In 2013 no one should be using checks as there are better and more accountable ways to transfer funds.

In a lot of cases now justices are opting to write in orders that the transfers shall be electronic and between the parties through a specific bank. It isn't uncommon these days that a justice will actually order that both parties sign a consent to release FRO and do it this way.

I don't have evidence of this *yet* but, I suspect a directive went down that parties are to manage CS through financial institutes and adjust child support themselves. Part of the backlog of issues at FRO is the yearly adjustment and the need to get a court order to adjust CS. FRO has become a tool for which the highly conflicted leverage to create havoc every year.

Also people need to be mature enough to say, hey I make X... I make Y... we both agree that MySupportCalculator.ca is the way to go and lets adjust and not bother with court orders and FRO...

Good Luck!

I just had to provide CRA proof of my payments. Through electronic banking I was able to download PDFs of my monthly statements and provide them to the CRA. It didn't cost a dime. It showed clearly I made transfers to my ex, then to FRO as that kicked in.
