Equalization question

How are household items split?
Can you put a dollar value on these items when figuring out equalization costs.

Currently my ex claims that I owe her money yet she refuses to put a dollar value on our home contents. I left with my clothes and nothing else. Can i put a dollar value towards the contents in a trial??

Generally, when dealing with household items (TV's, couches etc.) you assign a value equal to what you would get if you bought it off Kijiji or whatever. The retail price is irrelevant unless the purchase is fairly new (like a within 3 months). If your ex won't value items you know still exist in the house, you do it and let them argue why they shouldn't be included.

All assets are to be included in the valuation when dealing with equalization. The matrimonial home is dealt with separately in equalization, but its value could be used to offset any payment you may have.

The house was sold and settled, brand new appliances in house not included.

Her lawyer claims that there is zero value to contents. I was given a list of junk items that I could have if i hired a moving company to pick up. I don't want the junk and I have been gone for 2 years now and don't need anything from the house. I still think that 4 thousand is not an unreasonable number for half of the contents?? Most things in the house were no more than 3 years old. We are an average household.

Does anyone know what a average dollar value might be?? I am willing to low ball it to be done with it and not look unreasonable in front of a judge.

Never listen to your ex's lawyer.

There is no average. You need to be able to show the court (if it comes to that) a list of items and their rough values on the used market.
