Car for child-is it sec 7 expense?

Child has just acquired a drivers licence and would like both parents to help with the purchase of a used vehicle and car insurance.

Child will fund 1/2 of car purchase and 1/2 of yearly car insurance.

Would the remainder of these two expenses be split according to incomes?
 
It is not covered under CS.

So if you both thought it was a good idea, you should share in it proportionally to income, just like section 7. That would be the most 'fair' IMHO.

But like (some) section 7 expenses, you or the other parent can deny the need, so how much each of you pays is simply up to the each parent.
 
In my personal opinion...
Parents are there to help - if the kid deserves it, and is worthy of the trust.

Otherwise - a car?!? Are you kidding? Take the bus or make the bill yourself kid!

Just my opinion.

I highly doubt that a judge would order an S7 on a car unless the child in question has a disability and a special vehicle is required for their transport and no public transit system is available to accommodate the child.

If the vehicle was purchased as a joint asset, hasn't been transferred you are responsible for half the payments and insurance. It is a "joint" asset.

I didn't get my first car until after university (obviously paid for it myself as I was an adult then) - I still have the same bike I used while living away from home at university, and I lived in a small town during the summer without a car.

(I did just buy a new bike last year, but couldn't part with old faithful)
 
I agree with above, driving is a privilege. One should learn the value of life and the value of a dollar before assuming they should have a car.

It is an individual judgement call, but if it was leaving me short of cash, there would be no way the kid would get a vehicle. The problems the ex is creating belong only to her as she caused them.
