Just got informed I will not be able to enter the family law center at the court house where my papers will be filed as I make to much money. Cant ask questions and the duty council cant talk to me either.

Just wanted them to look over my paperwork in case I missed something....oh well

good to know

It isn't so much of "banned", as it is more of you are not qualified for their services. Neither am I.

I did get to speak to them briefly to get an idea of what forms I need to file, but they would not otherwise review the information and would only speak in generalities.

FLIC is supposed to be for those of low income. While others may use their services, you have to be discreet about your income and only ask questions relating to forms and procedure.

you have to be discreet about your income and only ask questions relating to forms and procedure.

This is true. Keep it general and you'll be able to speak to them.
You can also speak to the person at the window to make sure you've filled out your paperwork properly.
On court days, you can still meet and get advice from duty council but they won't be able to go in and speak for you.

The 1st question she asked was how much do you make?.....She informed me I was not allowed to talk to duty council at any time, court date or otherwise, I asked for her name as It was hard to believe...In case the judge lays into me for missing something or what not, I`ll tell him I`m on my own in the court house I`m trying my best...

I`m the working poor...lol..

What about for people who are self-rep and just want to make sure they are using/filing all the proper forms? I find the flic office at my courthouse particularly NOT helpful, but they never asked me what my income is/was.

I would go back again another day and see a different person.

Flic won't talk about equalization or property, but they will give general advice on other stuff.

The person at the window will help you too on questions about your paperwork.

And you can always see duty council on the day of court. When you make too much, they just can't go into the court room with you, but you will still (and are encouraged by the judge) speak to them beforehand to get advice.

What court house are you at, if you aren't getting the help you need, go to another court house.
Generally when you are asked how much you make, simply state that you understand that you don't qualify and that you are simply asking general legal questions and not questions with regards to your case. Then see how receptive they are. I didn't qualify but was still able to get general help with a few things.

I wish it was in Toronto...but its 4 hrs away in a small town so I`m dealing with them by phone, I did visit a local court house for help but when they found out I was filling in a different court house they basically showed me the door...oh well....but I dont want you to worry about the mom...she is fully legaled up by legal aid....I barely have the gas to get there and have to take off work...lol

I`m filling tomorrow and Im using the form helper off the ministry web site....I know the judge is going to take a piece out of me come case conference...but I`m all the complete legal team...lol

I do not qualify for Duty Counsel. However, I ALWAYS ask for it, and always get DC. When the DC starts the questions to 'qualify' me, I explain that I know I do not qualify, but I only have PROCEDURAL questions.

While answering those questions, it is hard for them to not give you more advice than just procedure.

The exact same thing applies at the Court Clerks counter. Always start questions with, "What is the procedure for ...".
