Even if he WAS absent before, you should give him a shot - at least agree to do it on a tentative basis or transitional basis and have a review.
He might do it and fail and then you can say you gave it a shot
He might also it and succeed and then you'll theoretically be happy because your child will still have 2 parents in his life.
Consider how much money you'll waste fighting custody issue (20k together?) ask your kid when is 16 if he'd prefer you bought him a car or you guys fought for custody and see what he says.....
