  • School trip/events = S.7 expenses?

    Hello all!

    While I understand that post secondary education is covered under S.7's, is primary school field trip/events etc a Section 7?

    The child is entering into grade 1 in September. I would consider field trips/bake sales/events to be a normal consequence of raising a child and therefore covered under tabled child support.

    The Mom is claiming that anything extra to do with school should be considered an S.7 expense.

    What's right? One part of the Federal Child Support Guidelines under Section 7 expenses states:

    d: extraordinary expenses for primary or secondary school education or for any other educational programs that meet the child’s particular needs;

    It's kinda vague....your thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

    The guidelines specifically state extraordinary expenses. Therefore those not in keeping with the normal expenses of a child attending primary school. These would be things like private school or perhaps an expensive trip. Your child support payments include normal expenses like school fees, uniforms and the normal field trips.
    I did some hunting on the canlii website. Here's some relevant case law:
    CanLII - 2001 ABQB 439 (CanLII)

    CanLII - 1997 CanLII 11214 (SK Q.B.)

    CanLII - 1998 CanLII 3519 (BC S.C.)
