      This explains adoption which I believe is distinct from child custody.

        Adoption creates a new parental relationship between a child and a (previously unrelated) adult through legal means. With child custody, the formation of a new parental relationship is not at issue - the parental relationship exists, the question is how it is to be managed. So the child's consent to entering into a parental relationship is relevant to adoption, not so much to custody (though of course as children grow older, their opinions on how this relationship is to be managed will be given more weight).
