I let my lawyer go almost a year ago. It was very easy. I told her that I no longer felt comfortable working with her so I no longer needed her services. She asked me if another lawyer in the firm could assist me better but I told her no. That was that. She sent me (and ex's lawyer) notification about her not representing me any longer. I picked up my file from her office and I never looked back. I did not file anything with the courts.

On the rare occasion a judge will refuse the cease to act until the lawyer fulfills certain obligations.
This could be due to a scheduled hearing, or the issuance of an order. I had a lawyer who was ordered to correct an order that he filed that was incomplete. I wish the judge had allowed him to just quit, because the order that he did finally file still was incorrect, and cost me substantial amounts of time and money to correct.
