  • Ss duration

Weve been living together for over 20 years, and have children together. Child support seems very straightforward, we can review our notice of assessment each year and update. But how long should spousal support last? I make double her salary, but both our salaries are six digits, and ss using online calculators (like mysupportcalculator) put the amount close to 2k a month in ss. Is it reasonable that it last for 20 years or so?

What makes you think you will owe spousal with her workimg full time and making six figures? Will her lifestyle change dramatically?

Because his salary is double hers. The only question is on duration.

Forget what the numbers are or how many digits. 20 year marriage? Let's guess at 50 years old - approaching retirement? It could be indefinite. Yes it's more than reasonable.

        Suggestions:
Find a fee for service lawyer or mediator who will run the numbers through DivorceMate
Make it reviewable every 3 years.
Make it adjustable every year if any fluctuation expected in where kids live etc. because CS paid impacts the calculation in DivorceMate
Agree to have new Divorcemate numbers annually at shared cost.
Duration will be long. Half of the duration of the relationship is a rough rule of thumb but it is highly subjective.
Other factors are if sh/he gave anything up during the relationship like career advancement.
SS can be a black box.
Educate yourself on the underlying factors in the law , citatiions and other sites like law firm blogs etc.
