  • income tax claim and dependents

Afternoon folks, hope everyone is doing well today
My friend's exwife has full custody of children. One year fourteen year old decided to stay with him from August -August. He attempted to claim her as a dependent for that year and was told no because he had to claim her for twelve months from Jan to Jan? So then he tried to claim the child support that he would have paid to ex wife that he is able to claim because of agreement made long ago. He was then told that he could not do that. Ended up owing Revenue Canada big bucks. HELP.

I don't know much about the rules to claim... but I do know that Revenue Canada will not accept child support claims for support orders and agreements made after 1997.

CS is not decuctible if the agreement was made after 1997 OR if the agreement has been varied since 1997.
