you are thinking there is sucha wide spread in your assets - the 50K you bring up, was this earned during your marriage? If so you should look at it as more like we divide our assets 50/50 and it is half hers. Question I put is why or how did all end up under your name when none went to her??? doesn't make much sense.
if it is right and you have something that is valued at 50K today, yes you owe her half or 25K but you keep the item(s) worth the 50K. Lawyer did say it is common to half to sell assets to pay the equalization - that is what sucks.....make sure you can sell it for what you value your stuff..... Anyway you can transfer some to her to equal it out?
Last is - aside from the 8 k in jewlery there is a rule regarding not valuing items that are very personal to her (and you) say clothes...... jewelery can fall under this too. Everything is realitive though most people who do not have assets do not have big dollar jewelry??? I close this with..... did you go room by room and list the stuff, put a value to each - finally make YOUR proposal as to what is yours, what is hers. I have been told you need to agree as if you fight over stuff (most people's homes will liquidate for say 10K (not much anyways) - lawyers will eat that up real quick..... it is just not that important. Been told that your list - you should try and print off online adds for similar items to value each item. Do that and the court will accept your submission (assuming your ex just says I have nothing!..... you can't just have nothing that is for sure.
Do this list (pain in the ass time consuming but if it saves you 20K in asset "transfers" to your ex - how many hours do you need to work to net 20K?????) It would be worth your time I think and again it is your proposal - the better job you do the more likely it would be accepted.Last edited by ddol1; 07-23-2012, 11:00 PM.

I just had some jewellry appraised within the past 3 months and the price of gold did not affect the appraisal at all.
Purchasing and selling jewellry is quite the racket. No one wants to hear that that 24 k diamond pendant isn't worth 1/4 of what they paid for it one week ago. Jewellry is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
