  • How Do I Claim Child Care Expenses?

I am in a shared custody situation. I pay 75% of child care for two kids (7 and 4 at end of 2005).

The cost of child care was over $5k but the "Help" portion of the CRA tax forms didn't make alot of sense to me. And, my tax software cut the amount off at $4k given that I only put one child down as a dependant.

Does anyone have any hints/help/insights into this?

    Thanks in advance

All tax software does not handle dependents, e-t-s, and child care very well (and neither does CRA). You can claim CC expenses for both children. My brain is fried right now, but as I recall when I talked to CRA there is varying limits from $4000 to $10000 based on age or something. Also, I would fill in the CCTB to get your share of the Universal Daycare Benefit.

I do my taxes by hand. If I make a mistake, they can figure it out.

BTW, it is per child. So with two children, even at $4000 max. each, the maximum would be $8000 which is more than your expense of $5000.

In the tax software you probably can add another child, but TICK BOX that they are not a dependent.... or something like that.

A lot of the income tax software (QUICK TAX)you can over ride the entries.

Thanks for the inputs. I'll see how it goes with CRA.
