Court ends battle over dead man’s religion
A court in Bangladesh has ended a three-year legal battle over the religion of a murdered man by ruling that his remains can be used for medical research, a lawyer said yesterday.
A magistrates’ court in Dhaka ruled it could not determine whether college professor Chandan Kumar Chakrabarti, also known as Sazzad Hossain Chandan, was a Hindu as his first wife claimed, or a Muslim as claimed by his second wife.
“The court said on Monday that his body should be used for medical research,” lawyer Abu Abdullah Bhuiyan, who represented the Muslim wife Aklima Akter Poly, told AFP.“We’re not satisfied with the outcome and we’ll go to a higher court.”
Poly wanted Chandan, 38, whose murder in 2009 has not yet been solved, to be buried in line with Muslim customs, claiming that they married after he converted to Islam from Hinduism.
But his first wife Tithi Chakrabarti went to the court. She said Chandan, born a high-caste Brahmin, never changed his religion and demanded that the body be cremated in accordance with Hindu beliefs.
She also accused his second wife of faking her marriage to take control of the professor’s property.
“We presented evidence that Chandan underwent circumcision and changed religion prior to his marriage with Poly, who was his student. But the court ignored it,” Bhuiyan said.
