I would say ask your lawyer. Be honest.
"I think you are wonderful and I would love to have you continue to represent me. Unfortunately, I have been laid off and I can no longer afford you directly. I was able to obtain a legal aid certificate. Would you be willing to continue to represent me as a legal aid client? I recognize that it is a pay cut and I understand if this doesn't work for you".
Your lawyer may decide that a client in hand is worth a better paying client in the bush, so to speak.
