  • RESP at time of separation

We used to contribute to an RESP while we were married, and since then, she's decided not to contribute to it.

I decided not to push it, however, what would be the best way to split this asset?

I want to transfer the balance into another RESP account, because we get a better rate there. But, I don't want to buy out my ex's portion of it, since it's not her money to begin with. However, I think the fair option would be to give her something in return, since she'll have to pay for it later.

I think I have two options, one would be to keep the account open, and just let it mature untill she goes to university. Or, I could write in the separation agreement that she contributed to half of that balance, and a reasonable amount should be considered her portion when our daughter attends university.
