In Alberta the Arbitrations are directed/managed/led by a judge. This is different than a trial which is basically directed by the two lawyers. If there are no expert witnesses, and both parties have entered into "binding" arbitration, the judge (who is paid for by the taxpayers and not the two parties) makes the final decision. There is no court reporter... no transcript. Judge has had the benefit of having read all of the relevant material 30 days prior to the hearing. For this reason the Arbitration process in Alberta is considerably faster than a trial. Now in Ontario it sounds as though things are quite different as you have (3) lawyers - each party has their lawyer + the cost of the arbitrator + court stenographer. It stands to reason that in Ontario the lawyers would want to drag things out.
