  • School Uniforms

It's back-to-school time and the ex has already started sniffing around for extra money to cover these expenses. Last year, I paid $200 towards half the school uniform money and never did get receipts back, despite numerous requests.

Are school uniforms counted as an extraordinary expense? I would think the money spent on uniforms is money saved on normal school clothes - and clothes are part of the money rolled into my usual child support payments.

I can't find a definative answer one way or the other, so I'm not sure how to repsond. Any advice?

I agree with this. Since they are using uniforms in the place of regular cloths this is part of the CS. Remember what extra-ordinary implies in family court. Something that is not expected or is above and beyond the norm.
For a family enrolling their children in a say catholic school where the uniforms are mandatory, then this is an "expected" expense, therefore not extra ordinary or out of the norm for a catholic school.

There is a case where one parent sought costs for travel to hockey games, and the judge found that because travel expense was to be seen and understood to be a normal expense when enrolling a child in this sport did not allow extra ordinary costs. If I find this I will post a link, it is very similar to your situation with cloths.

      Thanks - that's what I thought

I've agreed to help out with some back to school stuff (backpacks, binders, etc.) - which again are not extraordinary expenses... I'm just being a good dad. I'm drawing my line at the uniforms though, especially after I got the run-around re: receipts last time.
