We were doing so well for a bit there. We should've known it was only a matter of time before you know what hit the fan again...
I've posted on extracurricular activities in the past. A number of times, mom has gotten D8 super excited to join something, but has never followed through on it. They live such a distance away, it's nearly impossible for us to sign her up for anything other than the odd cooking class, as most programs run either throughout the week, or would fall on mom's wknds, too.
But, we're so happy to have just learned that we can sign D8 up for swimming lessons for the couple of weeks she'll be with us on summer vacation. She's going to be ecstatic! It's a two week program that allows her to earn her swimming badges. Not only something she's been wanting for so long, but also a life skill that every kid should have. Registration is next week. We can't wait to tell her that she has to pick out a new swimsuit for her swimming lessons!!!
Now, mom has now told dad that she wants to sign D8 up in hockey, the cost is $600, plus we've been quoted roughly $300 for the gear, and that he will have to pay his portion of the costs. This little girl hasn't played any sport, ever, she doesn't know how to skate on the ice without help yet. She's begged to be put in swimming, gymnastics, soccer...each of these would be excellent for her and are at a much, much lesser cost. In our opinions, any of these options would be a great start before signing her onto an organized league that will require a huge commitment from her.
Also, this would require us to commit to 6 trips back and forth on the weekends, each way being anywhere from one and a half hour drive, to two hour drive for away games. 6 trips! We'd be spending every weekend together...driving back and forth.
Mom moved D8 over an hour away (approx. 96km) in 2012, and now in January of this year, she moved her another 30km or so from there. D8 now lives roughly an hour and a half from us.
We've now called and emailed every organization in mom's area and we've found a soccer program that might have one spot left, also, we've found a gymnastics program that can take her in now. Dad's provided mom with all the information, to which she replies, "she wants to play hockey!"
Are we being unreasonable? Please, if this sounds unreasonable to you, shed some light on us. If like us, you think this is unreasonable, then how would you respond? She keeps emailing that we're selfish and only thinking of ourselves, "yes it will be some driving, but it's what ***** wants...why are you being so selfish?..."
