  • Purchase Revenue Property while Separated

I came into a small inheritance (parent died..., which is exempt from the divorce process). I have been separated for about 2 years (CFL process currently underway). Can I purchase a piece of property for revenue purposes.

My wife purchased RRSP's during the separation period (investment for herself), and apparently I'm not entitled to them..., so why can't I purchase revenue property with the same result (investment for myself). I am in Alberta.

Who says you can't? You can do whatever you want after separation... however if equalization has not been finalized you may want to hold off... even though your inheritance doesn't count...if you end up owing your ex for equalization, you may find it easier to pay the cash from the inheritance then to get into withdrawing or transferring money from an RRSP
