  • Melatonin use

Found out over the holidays that bm is drugging the kids with melatonin every night to get them to go to sleep. When they come to our house that are so wired they don't go to sleep until 11 pm. Bm is a recovering drug addict and nurse (who doesn't work) and is supervised by social services due to her inability to parent. (Almost 3 years of supervision) yes we know we should have custody. Judge seems to think it's OK for kids to be with mentally ill addict. Anyone have any experience with melatonin? I know it's over the counter and i know its legal but I don't think you should be drugging your kids every night with it!!

I know multiple times my STBX wanted to give the kids Benedryl so they can sleep. I strongly opposed. I would record that to show that is done out of convenience to bail out parenting.

I use it everyday myself. If I didn't I wouldn't be able to sleep (night shift worker) during the day. I think its better then sleeping pills.

I don't think the melatonin is to blame for them not sleeping till 11pm at your place. They maybe need more physical activity to burn off the energy. She is probably having the same issues with the kids not going to bed.

I didn't take it today and only slept 4hrs ugh.

Melatonin is naturally occurring in the body but my doctor recommended that I buy some to help me sleep and see if it helped before I try sleeping pills.

I used to use it myself when I was working shift. It helped when transitioning from Nights to Days and back.

I'd never give it to a child though. I only have the belief of trying to limit chemical compounds from my body as much as possible. Kids are better off with routines so that their bodies learn to make them tired at 9ish.

I understand for adults. Kids who are preschoolers shouldn't be given something every night to go to sleep. Apparently she is giving them high doses.

From what I've read it's suitable for kids with sleeping disorders and ADHD etc. I also think they stay up later because they are used to getting melatonin to fall asleep. I totally disagree with using it on kids just so they go to sleep faster!!

Oldest child told us that mom has no trouble getting kids to go to bed because she gives them melatonin. Bm has given it to them before. Asked my BF to pick it up - pharmacist told him alarmingly high dosages given. I'm speculating she's still doing same dosage. He didn't realize she was still giving it to them.

What happens when you're used to getting it, then say every other weekend at dad's you're not? There has to be some kind of adverse affect???

You need to be talking to the family doctor for these questions, not a divorce forum.

Melatonin is available on the shelf so tge pharmacist would have no idea what dosages were given.

Pharmacist does know because he asked for specific dosages which were too high for their ages.

He asked whom? And kept track of it where in order to tell the other parent?

Our family doctor recommended it for the kids over the years. You need to be speaking with your children's doctor about your kids specifically - or rather your partner needs to speak to his kids family doctor.

He asked the pharmacist about the dosages and she said they are too high. I am simply asking the opinions of other parents regarding the use of melatonin. I am aware a doctor will have to be asked and possibly social services informed if she is giving them high doses.

The question was asked how he knows what dosages they are given, you said the pharmacist told him the dosages, but then also that they are too high.

Who exactly knows what dosage she's giving the kids and how?

Bm asked my BF to get the melatonin. Bm had the dosages she was giving written down. As mentioned this was a while back so I'm thinking she's still giving high dosages

Obviously what you want to hear is that mom is being horrible for giving the kids this. Well you're not going to hear this. If dad was so worried back then when mom 'wrote down the doses' why didn't he do something then?
