    Silly question -

My ex recently sent my lawyer a letter outlining his arguments in our case. Apparently he is now self represented. To save money I would like to respond to the letter myself.

When I respond do I use the pronoun 'I'? Or should I refer to myself in the 3rd person as if the letter was written by someone else?

    Thanks!

I'd always go with third person, and usually stick with "the applicant" and "the respondent" or maybe "the husband" and "the wife".

It somewhat reduces the emotions involved in reading it.

I would generally go with "the applicant, Mr Smith" and "the respondent, Ms Jones-Smith" (or however you handled your names.)

One of the critical things in your writing is to make it easily readible and understandable. Judges are well-educated and experienced but they also get thousands of pages of paper across their desks. Above all they will appreciate clarity.

I used "the Applicant (Mother)" and "the Respondent (Father)" ...

Just for my own educational purpose. What do you meant by "his arguments in our case" ? I never heard that you sent other party "arguments in case".
