quick question for a friend.
His oldest is going to college in the fall. He gave her the papers for a scholarship at his work that would of paid for everything. About two weeks before the application was due to go in, he asked her if she had finished filling it out. She said she was having an issue with some of the questions. He went into his work and talked to whoever deals with it in the office and he was told all she had to do was call the number at the bottom of the one page and they would gladly help her. He was also told she was basically a shoe in as no one else was applying. Two days before the deadline she said she was still having issues filling it out and he told her again to call the number. He was talking to the mom also about it. Deadline passed and she didnt send it.
He pays 100% sec 7 due to the mom not working but there has never been an issue with stuff. The relationship with daughter has always been strained and pretty well non-existent ever since the parents split, mom has totally alienated the daughter.
The daughter has now told the father that she will be living in residence (he lives in the same city and she could stay with him, mother lives about 2hrs away from college)and she (daughter) expects him to pay 100% of everything. I have told him to talk to a lawyer.
Could he be off the hook a bit for paying considering she never applied for a scholarship from his work that would of paid for everything? There are two other kids but one is thinking more of trade school and the other has some severe mental health issues that doctors are trying to figure out the best way to help him but as it is so far, he probably wont finish high school until he gets his mental health sorted out. There is an RESP but he was hoping to use that for the second child due to the scholarship (if she would of applied by the deadline) paying for the first child.
