process for the exclusive possesion of matrimonial home

I was wondering what the process is for getting exclusive possesion of the matriomonial home. I have read what factors will make a judge decide to award this to one spouse or the other, but I am wondering what is the process to lead up to this.
Does the spouse requesting this need to file an order with the courthouse (or through their lawyer)
Does the other spouse get to respond to this? and then the judge decides?
