Why your child support payments may be adjusted, starting today | CTV News

Department of Justice has updated the federal child support tables.

And way way down near the bottom of the article, we find
She also added that child support payment adjustments won’t be automatic. They should be made as part of custody and support agreements between the two parties in each case, she said.
What a misleading headline, designed to panic both people who pay or receive child support into thinking it will immediately go down or up out of their control.

In truth it will only affect people who are in the process of finalizing their child support agreements or court orders, or people who adjust after tax return exchange time next spring.

I didn't take it as misleading. The tables are updated today. People may choose to adjust at their own pace but the tables are in effect today.

Why your child support payments may be adjusted, starting today

Was just presented with the new calculations in court yesterday; my payments will now be going from 1400$ a month (ss and cs combined) to almost 2200$ a month. I only make 2600$ net a month. If this is awarded I will be living on 400$ a month approximately with kids half the time.

If I give up the kids, then miraculously it drops to less than 1000$ combined.

To me the message is clear, the government cannot afford to lose workers but the can afford to lose parents

While they may be using the new updated child support tables in your case, it doesn't sound like they are the major factor in your increased monthly expenses.

How does a percentage calculation change?

Edit: Read the link, due to tax changes. Makes sense

Child support is the most ridiculous thing ever to exist. Same as spousal support. Women have worked very hard to manipulate the laws to their favour.

That is why you should NEVER get involved in any way with a female in Canada who earns less than you do. You would be much happier dying a virgin or banging an escort than to be paying your ex spousal and child support for the rest of your life. The escort may sound expensive at first, would be much cheaper in the long run. You could be banging 10 escorts a month for how much you pay your ex!

If she is a high income earner, make sure you filter out her attitude and make sure she's not messed up, and will likely encourage 50/50 at separation. Most normal women do as long as the man is normal too.

If you have a court order already, do NOT consent to any change. Ex can hire lawyer and go to trial and win if they want the extra $30 a month.

Ha ha ha, that's the advice I give to my kids all the time. Well, except the banging hookers part!

                Post of the day!

You could argue that the amount of CS is unfair.
You could argue that the amount of CS is unfair in shared custody situations.
I'm not sure how you would argue that CS is simply ridiculous.

The issue is more one of informed consent. I see nothing wrong with SS as long as both spouses are aware of the issues when they decide that one partner should not work, or work less.

To me, if one spouse earns less than 50% of the higher earning spouse, then as part of their tax returns both spouses should have to sign a form laying out the rough calculation of the SS requirement should they divorce.

"Your spouse is earning $1000 this year, and you are earning $130,000. Should you divorce, you will likely have to pay about $2500 a month for the next 13 years, for a total cost of $390,000. Initial here to indicate your understanding of this obligation"

That is why you should NEVER get involved in any way with a [person] in Canada who earns less than you do.
                  Very true

They are, the exact same. The STBX’s lawyer always copy pastes.

I agree with the “philosophy” behind CS, but with reasonable people it would not be needed.

Unfortunately the system is broke and is often used to hurt the other party. Or as a way to get rich.

Others use it to gain all the advantages of being married with none of the responsibilities.

There is a SSAG guideline with and without children

                      8. THE WITH CHILD SUPPORT FORMULA - Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines July 2008

But again, given what you said, it doesn't sound like these new tables are the main reason for your monthly costs going up so much, since you claim that if you don't have the kids at all, then you're paying $1000 all in? Sounds like spousal and something else, what revisited, and revised?
