  • Am I crazy?

So I am the coach my son's U-10 soccer team (house League). We are in an intercity house league tournament right now governed by FIFA rules.

Today, we had a semi final game - I get to to the field and I see its got very strange dimensions, especially the goals . I ask some league people, "Is this actually a proper field - and they say yes it is". I knew the game would be bad because the nets being so small meant a win would come out of some freak occurrence.

We ended up losing 2-0 (on a penalty shot and some weird mess up). The whole game we absolutely dominated the other team maybe like 15 scoring chances vs 2 for them but the nets were so ridiculously small (~10x5) that it effectively neutralized us....

I went home read the rules and it say the soccer nets must be 18ft x 6ft and so I sent an email disputing the results as the net was significantly smaller and it had a major impact on the outcome.

    How crazy am I?

I would think that if both nets were the same size then there was no advantage to either side. You may think you outplayed them most of the game but it doesn't matter the shots on goal, its the ones that go in that count. The other team was just better at scoring.

You cannot say the size of the net neutralized you as they had to shoot into the same size net and obviously they managed to get the ball in.

This is likely a question I would have posted, and received and reviewed answers, BEFORE I sent out an email to the league.

But, without a doubt, I certainly understand where you are coming from, and I think most of us would. I've had to sit on my 'horse show' parent hands a few times as well.

And of course, as SOTS has indicated, although the field might not have met requirements, both teams played the same field.

I coached my son's team U-8 this summer and one game we had to play on small nets no bigger than a doghouse and that was OK with the organization because they care about money only. We did win that game vs some team that came from Yellowknife but neither players nor I enjoyed the game as much as if the goal nets were normal size. So I think it's ok that you complained but I doubt they will give you a rematch.

Btw, this incoming indoor season we had tryouts for "A" team. My son is a real good player for his age and they know that. However, he had surgery and couldn't attend the tryouts and they put him on B team. Sadly we will miss this season because I dont want him to play with kids who literally cannot kick the ball.
