  • Subsidized housing

Does anyone know how subsidized housing works in Ottawa?

    -is there a maximum benefit?
-if someone reports little or no reported income how much can they be expected to pay in rent?
-do they consider child support (paid or received)?
-is there a calculator somewhere online that I could use to see what guidelines are?

I did that and all they could tell me was that it was established so that you paid ~30% of your gross income to rent. I asked two different agencies about CS and government credits but they didn't know off hand if they were considered as income for the purpose of obtaining subsidized rent.

Ok, I got an answer on this though I'm not convinced it's 100% accurate as it didn't come directly from the registry but an outside group that helps people find subsidized housing.
Apparently, they consider CS received as incom e (but don't subtract it from your income if your paying it, go figure) they do not consider cctb or other government credits as income.

They will adjust rent to 30% of your gross income but that may not include utilities or parking.

I'm not sure if this is of interest for anyone else but I thought I would post it anyway.

According to their website, the maximum is approximately 30% of the household’s combined gross monthly income.

According to the city of Ottawa's website on subsidized housing and Ontario Works, you must declare both spousal and child support as income, which reduces the amount of assistance you can recieve:

            As a general rule.

If it's not taxable income -then its not included for consideration in subsidzied housing.

At least, that is my recollection from dating a girl in my Ottawa years that had a child and lived in subsidized housing.

Mind you that was over ten years ago - maybe its changed.
