....because "equality" as we know it, works on a sliding rule i.e. some only want it to apply when it suits their most important agenda, and not in instances like this, where it's perceived that "Mom knows best"

Woops. Sorry, I posted another thread about the same topic:

http://www.ottawadivorce.com/forum/f...hildren-20129/

As I said there, I thought it was strange that they didn't issue an Amber alert, because the "vehicle description" was too vague. Mom must have used a totally unknown vehicle then?, but...

The kids are still "abducted" by Mom, and they have photos of the Mom and children, which someone could recognize?

I agree though, if the gender roles were reversed, this would be playing out totally differently.

Yes. Change Sandra to Sam, her to him, and woman to man and there'd be amber alerts all over the place.

This case has been pretty heavily reported where I live, and the discrepancy in the sentences has to do with the discrepancy in conduct between the parents, not gender. The father did nothing except give his son nutritional supplements as the child got sicker, while the mom tried to find out what was wrong with him and finally called an nurse (too little, too late). The judge also found that the mom demonstrated remorse and awareness that her conduct was wrong, while the father did not accept that he had a role in his son's death. So both of them were found guilty of negligence (failing to provide the necessaries of life for a child), the differences between their behavior meant that they got different sentences.
