CatvsLion is on a distinguished road
Default New Child Care Allowance

"Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that the Government intends to move quickly to deliver on its commitment to support child care choices for parents, effective July 1, 2006.

Under the new Choice in Child Care Allowance, all families will receive $1,200 per year for each child under six, to be taxable in the hands of the spouse with the lower income."

My question - how is this to be split between split parents - does anyone have more detail on this? Does it go right to daycare, does it go right to the primary parent to do what they wish with it, etc.

Catsvlion,

They will most likely distribute it in the same manner they distribute the child tax benefit.

Whomever receives the CTB will most likely receive the day care supplement.

I would think that the full amount should or would be applied to day care costs and the remainder of the section 7 expense should be shared prorated to reflect respective salaries. This seems logic.

To me this is promotimg making the almighty big buck among married families i.e. BOTHmom and Dad have to work to acquire "things", instead of someone actually raising their own children--hey, there's a new concept. When my children were pre school and even up til about 2 years ago, I worked in the nighttime--I gave them supper , their baths, took them to the gym,had picnics, raced our remote control cars in the park, attended every soccer, baseball game etc. etc. etc. in the daytime and worked in the night time when they were settled for the night. Despite my ex being there , I still trusted my babysitter more, so she'd come in the nighttime. They hated each other so he'd inevitably end up at my workplace; or he had gone back to live with his mommy again Ha.
My point is I lived on four-five hours sleep, but I can still say I raised my own children. Despite the fact my ex and I were together, I felt like a singlew mom ---he was like another child.

I think stephen harper's new bill should state the x amount of dollars should be given to all families with children 12 and under for purposes as the parents see fit.
If you think 12 is too old for a babysitter look at our society---the majority of pre-teens are latch-key kids, whether by parent's necessity or not. 10, 11,12 year olds are still little people, they need structure after school, not to run free, like so many of them do now--it's not theri fault.
Personally I think canada will be americanised in the near future.I know, let's not talk politics ha ha

Default Who gets the credits?

Can one not say in the seperation agreement in even years wife gets the credits, in odd years, husband gets the credits OOORRRRR ...

If one spouse is paying a hefty portion of his income as payor to the other spouse for child support and other related expenses ... you could ask to have exclusive rights to those credits and all?

I think your second suggestion is the better, most feasible one. If the years were to alternate there would be too much paperwork and the government wouldn't go for it--Understandably. They would spend their time determining which spouse gets it which year and which tax assessment they would base the credit on. Throw in a few million families doing this and you have utter chaos.
Hey Hubby, any decisions or new developments in your neck of the woods. Be careful--you said your wife was talking Matrimonial home primary caregiver etc. so be sure you're aware of what may happen any day. It wouldn't be good if you were thrown for a loop--ya' know, surprise surprise!

GKTT,

It will come as more as a 'disappointment' rather than 'surprise' should it come down to that. She was trying to conjure up the proper terminology and had difficulty remembering, probably because her initial consultation was months ago?
