The National Post had this article today. Some may find it interesting.

I don't get the "secretive" part.

Perhaps the article pertains to cases brought forward by Child and Family Services? Come to think of it, when I've been to family court I've never seen children running around anywhere. Perhaps the cases involving CAS (Alberta) are held on a different floor or are dealt with in Provincial Court rather than Court of Queen's Bench. I dunno.

I think they used "secretive", because yes, the cases mentioned had CAS involvement, and those cases are typically closed to the public.

(If CAS is involved, and you are sitting in the courtroom, you would be asked who you were, and if not a party to the case, asked to leave by the judge).

Plus, it's probably rare for "media" to be in family court.

So if CAS is giving evidence in a case is it automatically deemed "secret"? Many people have CAS at their conferences for child custody issues.

If CAS is involved (at least in Ontario), with child-protection stuff, then it's typically not open to "public".

(I have sat in on portions of a few family law cases, at local court here, to familiarize myself with court. I was not a party to any of those cases. In one CAS one, the judge asked who I was, and I stated I was just attending court, and not a party to the case they were beginning, and she said I had to leave, as that case would be closed to public. I said "no problem". In another one, nobody said anything to me)

A little confused about the final sentence...

The added hurdle is the short window of time you have in which to show progress: Children under six should not be made society wards after one year, the law says, so this means the court needs to decide the child’s future quickly.

I'm am recently involved with a CAS case. I was told that children under 6... if they are still in CAS care the child is then slated for adoption. It's expected the parents should be able to resolve the issues within that 1 year period.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

I haven't sat in the courtroom yet (not until February), but I am interested in how the process will work. I think the article reads as more "hopeful" than I would expect. The judges profiled in the article sound much nicer than the ones I've been hearing about.

These Men's Rights Groups are not helping anybody - I am reading the commentary and the Ottawa Men's Centre guy is coming off like a nut case - they need a spokesperson and a PR campaign.

Stella is gonna kill her child, way to go judge.... anger management classes aren't going to turn a lunatic who broke her kids bones to a normal parent.
