Thanks for the tips everyone. I can see now that monthly spousal makes more sense.
My biggest worry was that we would have to compare incomes each year, which leads to people hiding money....and fights, and all that. However I realized it is our separation and we can write it up however we want.

it needs to respect the law or it can be overturned.
