I may be shot for saying this, but if the NCP is mentally ill and desperately needs help, is he really fit to be with the children unsupervised?

It's not court ordered, but he takes his visitation at his mothers residence and she is normally about to help him. We are currently in court and I am thinking of making it official that she be avalible to him for assistance. I'm concerned for my children but on the other hand don't want to go for full supervised because that makes it even harder for them to develop a proper relationship with him. It's a very fine line as to what is best for the kids, less volitility or more time with dad.
