what a mess!

ok so i have a very sticky sitiuation that i need all the advice i can get. i got married to my husband over 2 years ago. he was from jamaica and his visa was expired, but i was pregnant so figured it was the right thing to do at the time to keep him in the country. i was not so lucky to keep him here because he was picked up by immigration 2 weeks after our wedding and was deported 3 months later. i applied for his sponsorship and waited. but during our long seperation my husband started becoming very verbaly abusive even going so far as to threatening my sons life. so i cancelled his papers and now want a divorce. my problem is that i know he does not want to give me one so he will make it hard for me to find him. if i send him the papers in jamaica he will not sign anything saying that he has been served or even pick them up in that case. i have an address for a family member of his but he doesnt live there and i no longer even have a phone number for him. if he doesnt co-operate do i have to wait 7yrs for a divorce? i have messages on my phone saved of him threatening me and my son will that help my case? im so confused, i dont even know where i should begin.

well im trying to find as much information as i can before i go to a lawyer. im a single mom and lawyers cost too much, plus the last lawyer i did hire i had to sue in small claims court for not doing their job. i would like to do whatever i can myself without them.

yes i did win, it was my immigration lawyer. felt very satisfying to make him pay for his mistakes.
