am i married?

An odd title I know, but here's the situation.
About 5 months ago, I was married in Thailand.
The marriage was made official at the local government
office in Bangkok. It was not registered at the
Canadian Embassy.
What i would like to know is, is this marriage legal in
Canada? If we broke up, would it be necessary to seek
a formal divorce here in Canada? If so, how would that
be accomplished?
Any info you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks

I would check with the canadian embassy for that country. They would be aware and up to speed on the marriage laws of that country.

Hi single and welcome. I’m not entirely sure about Quebec, but in the other Canadian provinces, if the marriage is valid under Thai law, then normally it would be recognized. (There are exceptions, but only in pretty exceptional circumstances - e.g. if one of you was underage, or lacked the mental capacity to marry, or you were close relatives, or this was a bigamous marriage, etc). Governments don’t want to create situations where a person is married in one place but not considered married in another place, so generally if your marriage is valid where it was held, it will be recognized throughout the world.
