Never a waste of time so pursue it
If nothing else your son when he is older and curious and able to contact you will know you tried to find him and want him in your life.
What is meant to be, will be and if your ex thinks she will be able to prevent you from seeing him in the future...she is sadly mistaken and it will only come back to bite regardless of your previous crime.
