Description: The Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act governs divorces in Illinois. Each dissolution case is unique. For this reason, our firm handles them each as the facts and law dictate. Some divorces occur when both the husband and wife agree to end the marriage. Other cases are initiated because one of the parties has some "grounds" to seek the divorce. Unlike in some states such as Nevada, grounds are required in Illinois to obtain a divorce unless the parties have been separated for at least six months. There are several areas of grounds, from adultery to mental cruelty. We investigate each case to determine whether grounds reasonably exist and we counsel our clients accordingly. Other typical issues found in divorce cases include: Division of marital property; Division of marital debts; Child custody, visitation and support; Maintenance (alimony); and Insurance and pension issues.
